May 21, 2004, Newsletter Issue #95: Where to Put the Scratching Post

Tip of the Week

To train your kitty to use a scratching post, try putting it right in front of the furniture she scratches the most. Rub the post down with catnip to encourage her to spend more time there and give her treats for using the scratching post as well. Make sure that she knows that climbing and clawing on her scratching post is okay and actually encouraged.

Once Kitty is using the scratching post instead of the furniture, you can slowly move it to it´s permanent location, in a prominent area so that your cat uses it.

Many cats enjoy scratching and stretching after a nap or after they´ve eaten. Because scratching is also an emotional outlet, many cats will want to use the post when their owner comes home or as they anxiously await dinner.
