How do I help my finicky cat eat better?

Dry versus Wet Cat Foods

About Cat Food Nutrition - Feeding is critical in the long term care of any animal. What types of cat foods should you feed your cats? Dry cat foods are best for cats, because it will help clean their teeth and prevent the teeth from decaying in their later years. And you can leave dry cat food out without fear of it spoiling.

However, there are cats and kittens who will not touch dry cat food. For those fussy eaters, feed them small amounts of wet cat food once a day at the same time every day. Keep dry food out for them also, and eventually they will get hungry and try the dry food.

Canned cat food is more expensive, and once you open it, it lasts about a half hour before your cat decides it is no longer fresh enough! Canned cat food can be great for nursing ill or older cats.

My recommendation would be a basic diet of dry cat food, with small amounts of canned cat food for variety and interest.

This is actually very bad advice. Cats should not be fed dry food. In the wild, their diet is always "wet" (think about it) and has very little, if any, grain. Dry foods are mostly grain, often corn, which converts to glucose and can contribute to the onset of diabetes. Go with canned food.

I have heard the exact opposite: that cats are carnivorous by nature and need to eat mainly wet food that is more similar to the meat-based food that they would have "in the wild". Dry food is mainly carbohydrate, which is bad for them.

One thing that has not been mentioned is the fact that dry food can cause the cat to become prone to bladder infections as they may not drink enough, this has happened to my own cat-it can also lead to long term problems!

I (along with well informed veterinarians) disagree that dry food is the best nutrition for cats.
Cats are carnivores by nature and require protein, water and calcium for survival. Dry cat food is high in carbohydrates which may cause a cat to become overweight, malnourished, and have kidney problems as they become older.
Also, dry cat food has NOT been proven to clean a cats teeth.
If your cat had a choice of eating a mouse or it's dry food, which do you think it would choose?
For anyone who would like to be informed about cat nutrition, please do your own research and know what's best for YOUR cat. A lot of people have good intentions of giving their advice, but it may be inaccurate and harmful to your cat. I have found the following website to be very informative when it comes to feline nutrition - catinfo.org.
