How do I stop my cat from clawing the furniture?

A Sticky Solution to Shredded Sofa

If your cat insists on clawing your favorite chair or couch, put double sided tape in the area she prefers. The cats don't like this and they will not return. Have a scratching post nearby made of wood or corrugated cardboard sprinkled with catnip.

I put a very furry throw or blanket over the couch. My kitty will not scratch furry things for some reason. She would rather sleep on furry things or make muffins - which is much less damage. She prefers to scratch at a scratching post that is covered in rope.

SORRY, BUT MY KITTEN LOVED THE DOUBLE SIDED TAPE MADE FOR FURNITURE, HE THOUGHT I HAD MADE A GREAT GAME, IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO SEE HOW MUCH HE COULD SHRED AND ROLL IN. IT DID NOT STOP THE BEHAVIOR AND I HAD LITTLE PIECES OF HAIRY TAPE ALL OVER.

I would recommend not leaving any tape out for a cat. A friend had unpacked a new TV and left the packaging over night. In the morning he found his cat with its paws tangling in the tape of the packaging and had to bring the cat to the vet.
